who should be tested and what is involved?
Statistics according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention say that there are over 21 million new STI infections in the United States annually. I think we can safely say it is a pandemic and more people should be getting tested.
Basically, anyone who is sexually active should consider taking an STD test. However, people in the following categories are considered to be at higher risk and should definitely take the test.
You and your partner are thinking of stopping to use the condom
Condoms are the best way for sexually active individuals to protect themselves from STIs. However, as people get deeper into the relationship, they tend to get rid of it for reproductive and pleasure reasons.
Getting condom off your sex life can be risky especially if you are just getting to know your new partner. It is therefore prudent for you and your partner to get tested before embarking on the next stage of your relationship.
You have multiple partners
If you are not in a committed relationship and have sexual intercourse with multiple partners, you are a perfect candidate for STD testing.
The main reason for this is that while you may be protecting yourself, your partners may engage in sexual behaviors that may end up putting both of you at risk of an STI infection.

You have had issues with infidelity
One of the reasons why faithfulness is stressed in a relationship is to prevent the spread of STDs. There are however instances where one partner is faithful but the other one keeps steeping out of the relationship.
If you know that your partner has been unfaithful or you suspect them, it would be prudent to go for STD testing before you continue being sexually involved with them.
You are intending on getting into a new sexual relationship
When you are getting into a new relationship, we would advise that you talk to your partner about STD testing.
We stress on this because you barely know each other and have no idea where the other person has been. Since most people do not discuss their sexual history, the only way to be safe is by taking the test.
You have symptoms similar to those of an STI
Some STDs may not present symptoms for a really long time. However, if you have any of the following symptoms, it would be time for STD testing.
- Pain when urinating
- Lower abdominal pain
- Vaginal or penis discharge
- Pain when having sexual intercourse
- Vaginal odor
- Itching and irritation in the vagina or penis
- Bleeding in between periods for women
We would like to reiterate that some STDs are silent and if you are sexually active and suspect you have been exposed, you should go for STD testing.
When should I get STD testing?
The incubation periods vary for different STIs. But most of them should show up in the screening after two weeks.
We, therefore, recommend taking a test two weeks after exposure and a subsequent test six weeks after as a precaution.
However, for HIV testing we recommend that any person between the ages of 16 and 64 should take the test at least once every 3 months.
Research shows that most new infections come about from people who do not know they have it and therefore spread them unknowingly.
