STDs have their very own disgraces, especially because they affect not just the genitals, but some signs may also be seen on the skin of an infected patient. The CDC says in a report that the US holds the highest rate of STDs by around 20M cases yearly. As the primary of these infections show up on the skin, the dermatologists are just involved in handling the STD cases just like the urologists, infectious disease specialists and gynecologists to name some.

The most common STDs handled by dermatologists

1. Herpes simplex virus or simply HSV

It produces sores that are painful in the genitals area or around the mouth. The problem with herpes is that the virus will linger in the body throughout your life and that may be infectious even if the skin is healed and in its normal form, those who were given medicines to prevent the outbreak are not treated, but controlled. As one of the common STDs handled by dermatologists, HSV is easily controlled than treated.

2. Genital warts

These are just small skin bumps that are color red; this is triggered by the HPV. It often shows off after weeks or months of being infected. The genital warts do not really hurt nor it will not be itchy, but they can be a real embarrassment and unappealing to start with. More so, there are some strains of the HPV that can bring cervical cancer.

3. Syphilis

It may show off 3-6 weeks after a person is exposed. It may show up as a big open sore on your mouth or lips. Some of the sores might also show up on your tongue or it may also be visible in the mouth, it may be close to an ulcer, if it will be left untreated, it can bring a reddish rash throughout the body.

4. Chlamydia

This is one of the most typical kinds of STD; it has a dramatic sign that includes painful urination, discharges in the vagina and swelling of the genitals. On the other hand, chlamydia may also affect the parts of the body that are visibly seen, like the eyes wherein you can see a pink eye; this is serious and may cause blindness if left untreated. The infection may be because of touching of the eye after touching the affected part of the genitals or after touching the secretions of the genitals. It may also be because you have touched someone infected and then you touched your eye.

According to newly released information, dermatologists are good in handling STD cases and they have the expertise to handle skin infections, which may be prevalent. When you consult a dermatologist for a skin lesion or sore, you must let the doctor know if there is anything important that he/she has to know to further conduct tests or to provide you with the right type of medication for your case.
